GERMAN WRITER JULIA VON LUCADOU SELECTED FOR NEW RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN TARTU

The renowned German writer Julia von Lucadou has been selected for the Goethe-Institut’s new literary residency programme. Starting April 25, she will live and work in Tartu for six weeks. Among the applications received, her project stood out for its focus on misunderstanding and talking past each other. During her stay, she will also visit the festivals Prima Vista and Head Read.

Julia von Lucadou was born in Heidelberg in 1982 and studied creative writing at the Swiss Literary Institute in Bern and media dramaturgy in Mainz. She worked as a television editor and assistant director. Her debut novel “Hochhauspringerin” (“The High-Rise Diver”) was nominated for the Swiss Book Prize in 2018 and was awarded the Swiss Prize for Literature in 2019. In the book, she paints a picture of a surveillance and welfare society oriented towards perfection and optimal performance. An excerpt from the novel “The High-Rise Diver” with an afterword by Jaak Tomberg was published in the March 2024 issue of the magazine Akadeemia. The extract has been translated from German into Estonian by Anne Arold. In her second novel “Tick Tack” Lucadou critically examines several manifestations typical of contemporary society from the perspective of the social media generation, describing the radicalisation of young people on the internet. In 2023, a theatrical production based on the story was created.

During her residency in Tartu, Julia von Lucadou wants to initiate a literary exchange with Estonian authors about “filter bubbles” and their socio-political implications – issues that she also addressed in her novel “Tick Tack”.

The literary residency in Tartu is a collaboration project between the Goethe-Institut Tallinn, the German Cultural Institute in Tartu, the Prima Vista literary festival and three UNESCO Cities of Literature to celebrate the Estonian Book Year. The aim of the program is to encourage literature-related research and cultural exchange between the UNESCO Cities of Literature Heidelberg, Bremen and Tartu. The writer will have the opportunity to get to know the local literary scene and international authors at the Prima Vista literary festival in Tartu. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to visit the Head Read literary festival in Tallinn, which will also take place during the residency. In May, several events with the author will be organised.
